Who Should Cut the Ribbon at a Grand Opening?
The business founder or CEO cuts the ribbon as the default. If an elected official is attending, the convention is for them to cut alongside the business owner — or with their own pair of scissors, which makes for a cleaner photograph. Do not have more than three people at the ribbon cut.
More than three people at the ribbon cut creates a crowded photograph and a logistically awkward moment. If you have multiple VIPs who should be visually represented, position them behind and to the sides of the primary ribbon cutters rather than all reaching for the scissors simultaneously.
For the photograph specifically: position the ribbon at chest height, ensure the photographer is at the same level or slightly below, and brief everyone on where to look. The moment lasts 2 seconds — rehearse it once with everyone in position before guests arrive.
