How Do You Measure the Success of a Corporate Training Event?

Three levels: immediate satisfaction (post-event survey within 24 hours), knowledge or skill check (2–4 weeks after), and behavior change (manager observation at 60–90 days). Most organizations measure only the first. The first is the least predictive of actual value.

A training session people enjoyed is not the same as a training session that changed how they work. Immediate satisfaction surveys — 'How would you rate today's session?' — tell you whether people had a good time. They do not tell you whether anything was learned or changed.

The most actionable measurement for most Alberta companies: a 30-day follow-up email to participants asking three specific questions about application. 'What have you done differently in the last 30 days based on what you learned?' 'What specific situation have you handled differently?' 'What would you do differently next time?' These questions produce qualitative evidence of transfer, which is more useful than a satisfaction score.

Common questions

4.0/5.0 or 8.0/10.0 is a reasonable benchmark for a well-designed corporate training event. Below 3.5/5.0 indicates a design problem (content not relevant, facilitator not effective) or an execution problem (logistics, room, AV). Scores above 4.5/5.0 are achievable with the right content and facilitator but should be treated as enjoyment measures, not impact measures.
