How Do You Plan a Corporate Learning Event?

Start with the learning objective, not the format. Define what participants should be able to do or understand after the event that they cannot now. The format — workshop, conference, keynote — follows from that objective. Events planned backward from 'we want to have a conference' without a defined learning outcome produce low retention and low satisfaction.

The question that reveals whether a corporate learning event is worth planning: 'What will be different about how this team works 30 days after this event?' If you cannot answer it specifically, the event does not have a clear enough objective.

For Edmonton and Calgary companies, the most common corporate learning events are leadership development workshops (20–50 people, half to full day), professional development conferences (50–200 people, full day), and onboarding programs for new cohorts. Each has a different format, venue requirement, and success metric.

Common questions

For a workshop with an external facilitator: 8–12 weeks. For a conference with multiple speakers and 100+ attendees: 16–24 weeks. The main constraint is external speaker and facilitator availability — the best ones book out 8–12 weeks in advance.
