How Do You Get Nominations for Industry Awards?
Active outreach to member organizations produces three to four times more nominations than a passive form on a website. Personally invite specific companies to nominate, set a visible deadline, and send two reminder communications during the nomination period.
The passive approach — a nominations form on the association website, promoted via newsletter — works for established programs with a 5+ year track record and strong member engagement. For newer programs or associations that have not run awards before, passive forms generate thin participation.
The most effective active outreach for Alberta industry associations: a personal email or call to the most visible companies in each category, an announcement at existing industry events (conferences, AGMs), and a social media campaign targeting member organizations by name. Give nominees 4–6 weeks to complete their submissions — less than that produces low-quality applications.
Common questions
Yes, and self-nominations are common in most industry awards programs. They should be evaluated by the same criteria as external nominations. Programs that prohibit self-nominations typically receive fewer total nominations and exclude deserving companies that have no advocate to nominate them.
