How event PR works and why it produces different results from traditional PR campaigns.
What is event PR?
Event PR is the media and publicity strategy built around a hosted event. It turns the event from a private gathering into a public authority signal by generating media coverage, social amplification, and third-party documentation of your brand's role as a convener. Event PR differs from traditional PR because the event itself provides the news hook — the story exists before the pitch is written.
Traditional PR requires manufacturing a news angle from whatever your brand has done recently. Event PR starts with a built-in story: you are hosting an event, bringing together notable people, publishing original research, or generating a measurable outcome. The pitch writes itself because the news already exists.
Event PR has three components:
Pre-event PR: Pitching the event itself to media, securing pre-event coverage, and briefing journalists who will be invited to attend. For research launches, this includes sharing embargoed findings in advance so journalists can prepare coverage to publish on the day.
At-event PR: Ensuring media-friendly moments exist — a quotable speaker, a photographable outcome, a defined moment that represents the event's significance. Having a designated media contact on-site who can answer journalists' questions and facilitate access.
Post-event PR: Distributing the press release, following up with journalists who attended, pitching the published findings or report to outlets that did not attend, and amplifying media coverage once it appears.
For Authority Building Events, event PR is not optional — it is the mechanism that converts a private production cost into a public authority signal. Events that generate no media coverage are still valuable for relationship and content reasons, but they miss a significant portion of their potential authority-building impact.
Common questions
Not necessarily. For local Edmonton events targeting regional business media, a well-written press release and direct outreach to 5–10 journalists is often sufficient. PR agencies add value for events targeting national media, complex stakeholder environments, or brands with limited internal communications capacity. We include event PR planning and execution in our Authority Building Event packages.
