A direct answer, plus how to measure it and build it.

What is brand authority?

Brand authority is the degree to which buyers, peers, media, and AI systems recognise your brand as credible and knowledgeable in a specific category. It is not the same as brand awareness. A brand can be widely known and still lack authority. Authority requires documented expertise, third-party validation, and a pattern of cited contributions to the category.

Brand authority is built from signals that others create about your brand — not from what your brand says about itself. Those signals include:

Media mentions: When journalists and industry publications reference your brand as a source or example, they signal to readers and to search algorithms that your perspective carries weight.

Backlinks: When other websites link to your content as a reference, they signal that your content is valuable enough to send their audience to.

Citations: When researchers, analysts, and AI systems quote your data or frameworks, they signal that your expertise is original and verifiable.

Testimonials and case studies: When named clients publicly describe the results your brand produced, they signal that your authority is grounded in real outcomes.

Speak authority is different from documented authority. A company that claims to be a market leader without third-party evidence generates no authority signal. A company with three published research reports, 15 media mentions, and 40 inbound links has documented authority that search engines and AI systems can measure.

For brands looking to build authority, the strategic question is not "what should we say about ourselves?" — it is "what should others say about us, and how do we create the conditions for them to say it?"

Common questions

Related but distinct. Reputation is what people think of you. Authority is whether they treat you as a source. A brand can have a good reputation without authority — people like you but do not cite you. Authority requires that your expertise is referenced, quoted, and linked to by others in your category.
