The channels and timing that drive attendance to a grand opening event.

How to promote a grand opening

Promoting a grand opening effectively means using multiple channels simultaneously in the 2–4 weeks before the event: local media outreach, social media posts, email to your existing contact list, physical signage, and direct invitations to key stakeholders. Relying on a single channel — social media alone, for example — consistently underperforms.

Grand opening promotion works in two phases: building awareness before the event and driving action in the final week.

Building awareness (weeks 3–4 before the event):

Announce on social media with a save-the-date post. Include the date, location, and one specific reason to attend — a performance, a giveaway, a notable guest. Generic "join us for our grand opening" posts generate little engagement.

Contact local media with a pitch that leads with what makes the opening newsworthy: a notable business milestone, a unique product or service, a significant job creation announcement, or a community tie-in. The Edmonton Journal's business section, local news stations, and neighbourhood community papers all cover openings that have a story angle.

Send a personal email to your existing contact list: suppliers, past clients, professional contacts, and community connections. Personal emails from a named individual outperform mass email blasts in both open rate and attendance conversion.

Post physical signage at or near the location as soon as legally permitted. Passers-by who see construction or fit-out happening are already curious — a sign with the date converts that curiosity into attendance intent.

Driving action (final week):

Post reminder content on social media every 2–3 days with a specific call to action. Share behind-the-scenes photos of the space taking shape. Create urgency with any limited-time element — first 50 guests get something specific, not just vague "while supplies last" language.

Call or message your most important intended guests personally. A text or direct message from someone they know converts at a significantly higher rate than any automated reminder.

Common questions

Four weeks is the minimum for a meaningful promotional push. Six to eight weeks is better if you are targeting media coverage, coordinating a notable guest, or running a community promotion campaign. Less than four weeks limits your options to social media and direct outreach — broad awareness channels need more lead time.
