Team Building, Edmonton & Calgary, Alberta

How Often Should Companies Do Team Building?

One facilitated team building program per year, plus one or two lighter social events, is a useful baseline for most Alberta companies. More frequent than that produces diminishing returns; less frequent means each event carries more weight than it can reasonably bear.

The relationship investments made during a team building program decay over time — faster for remote or hybrid teams. For co-located teams, the decay is slower but still real.

Frequency is less important than quality. A well-designed facilitated program once a year produces better outcomes than three mediocre social events. If budget is limited, invest it in one program done properly rather than spreading it across events that do not have a developmental goal.

Common questions

For companies growing faster than 25% per year, annual team building may not be sufficient — new employees join regularly and team composition changes before the next program. A supplementary half-day integration event for new hires, in addition to the annual full-team program, is worth considering.
