Team Building, Edmonton & Calgary, Alberta
Does Team Building Improve Employee Retention?
Team building addresses one specific driver of turnover — poor team cohesion and isolation — but it does not address compensation, management quality, or workload. Companies that use it as their primary retention strategy without addressing structural issues see temporary morale improvements followed by continued attrition.
Employees who have strong relationships with their colleagues are less likely to leave than employees who feel isolated, even when other conditions are similar. Team building builds those relationships — but it does not create them from nothing and does not maintain them without ongoing reinforcement.
For Alberta companies competing for talent, team building is one of several inputs into retention — not the primary lever. The clearest retention benefit comes when team building is combined with competitive compensation, strong management, and meaningful work.
Common questions
Difficult to measure directly because team cohesion affects multiple outcomes through indirect pathways. The most credible approach: track turnover rates 12 months before and after a sustained team building investment (at least two programs per year), control for other variables, and look for trend differences. Expect a 6–18 month lag before effects appear in turnover data.
